Pottery Wheel Classes for Beginners and Skill Builders

There's something almost meditative about the spin of the wheel and the way clay rises between your hands. Our wheel-throwing lessons welcome first-timers, returning artists, and intermediate potters ready to push their technique further — all in a calm, encouraging Dublin studio.

Foundation: Centring & Opening

Learn to wedge clay, position yourself at the wheel, centre your ball, and open your first cylinder. No experience needed — just curiosity and a willingness to make glorious mistakes.

Intermediate: Shaping & Finishing

Build on your throwing skills with bowls, mugs, and vases. Discover trimming, foot rings, and handle attachment while developing confidence and consistency in your forms.

Advanced: Technique & Personal Style

For potters ready to refine their voice. Explore surface textures, glazing approaches, and work toward a cohesive series of pots that reflects your developing aesthetic.

Our adult pottery courses are designed around your schedule. Choose from weekday evening sessions starting from 6:30 pm or Saturday morning classes — ideal if you work during the week and want something genuinely satisfying to look forward to.

Dublin pottery classes at Clay Whisper Studio keep group sizes deliberately small. You'll get hands-on attention, patient guidance, and the kind of focused learning that helps you actually progress rather than just showing up.

Hand-Building Workshops for Functional and Decorative Ceramics

Hand-building is the most direct conversation you can have with clay. Using only your hands, simple tools, and a handful of fundamental techniques, you'll craft bowls, mugs, plates, vases, tiles, and sculptural forms with a character no machine can replicate.

Three Methods, Endless Possibilities

Our clay-making classes introduce you to pinch, coil, and slab building — three hand-building techniques that can be used individually or combined to make almost anything imaginable. You'll learn when to use each method and how to join clay pieces securely so your finished work survives the kiln.

These workshops appeal to hobbyists, craft lovers, eco-conscious makers who want to create sustainable home goods, and small business owners interested in developing a handmade ceramics range. Every student leaves with finished work to take home after firing.

"I'd never touched clay before and came out of the hand-building workshop with a set of breakfast bowls I actually use every day. The instructor made everything feel doable."

Sculpture Classes for Aspiring Ceramic Artists

Move beyond the functional and into the expressive. Our sculpture classes give beginners and transitioning artists a structured, playful environment to develop three-dimensional thinking, clay modelling technique, and a personal creative language in form and surface.

From Flat Page to Three-Dimensional Form

Many artists who draw, paint, or work in 2D are curious about sculpture but don't know where to start. Our beginner sculpture classes bridge that gap — you'll develop spatial awareness, understand how forms relate to light and shadow, and build confidence working in three dimensions.

Students work on form studies, figure and object modelling, surface texturing, and mixed-media experimentation combining clay with found materials. These are exploratory, process-focused sessions designed to help you discover what you want to say through sculptural form.

Form Study

Understand proportion, balance, and three-dimensional composition

Surface Treatment

Texture, carving, stamping, and colouring clay surfaces

Expressive Work

Push beyond realistic depiction into abstract sculptural concepts

Mixed Media

Combine clay with other materials for experimental outcomes

For Ceramic Artists

Drawing Courses for Ceramic Artists and Portfolio Development

Strong drawing underpins everything in ceramics — from sketching vessel profiles before throwing, to designing surface patterns, to presenting a body of work for art school applications. Our drawing courses are built specifically for ceramic makers and aspiring artists.

Observational Drawing

Train your eye to see form, tone, and proportion accurately. Work from ceramic objects, still life arrangements, and the human figure to develop the fundamental drawing vocabulary every visual artist needs.

Sketching for Vessel Design

Learn to sketch profiles, cross-sections, and design variations of pots before you go to the wheel. This course helps potters plan forms more intentionally and develop a more sophisticated personal aesthetic.

Surface Pattern & Portfolio

Design repeat patterns, surface motifs, and decorative drawings for application to clay. Ideal for students preparing art school portfolios or makers developing a visual identity for their ceramic work.

Art School Portfolio Preparation

If you're applying to an art college or design programme, our portfolio drawing course provides structured guidance on building a compelling body of observational and exploratory drawing work. Our instructors understand what admissions tutors look for and will help you present your practice confidently.

Flexible Access

Open Studio Sessions and Flexible Clay Access

Not every creative day fits inside a structured class. Our Dublin open studio gives you independent access to wheels, tools, a range of clays, and kiln services — so you can work at your own pace, pursue your own projects, and build the kind of regular practice that actually develops your skills.

About the Studio

About the Studio and Teaching Philosophy

Clay Whisper Studio was founded on a straightforward belief: that making things with your hands is one of the most human things you can do, and that everyone deserves access to it. We're a ceramics school and working studio in the centre of Dublin 2, teaching adults at every stage of their creative life.

Our courses — from pottery wheel classes and hand-building workshops to sculpture and drawing for ceramic artists — are taught with an emphasis on skill development, personal expression, and genuine creative community. We don't believe in the myth that some people are "artistic" and others aren't. We believe in teaching.

The studio is a place where working professionals come to decompress, where expats find community, where retirees rediscover play, and where aspiring artists take their first serious steps. We've designed our space and our teaching to make every person who walks through the door feel capable, welcome, and inspired to return.
